Analysis of Philippines Feed Industry

More feed mills are needed in the two Philippine island groups of Visayas and Mindanao in order to reduce the cost of meat in these regions, according to the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI)

There are very few feed mills in the Visayas and Mindanao, and this is the reason meat prices there are high, according to Dr Angel Mateo, officer in charge of the Animal Feeds Standards Division (AFSD) of the BAI,

There are 1,730 feed manufacturers in the Philippines, all located in Central Luzon and the NCR, which means feed prices in Visayas and Mindanao are higher due to transport costs.

“There is a need for more feed mills in Region 8 [Eastern Visayas] and the ARMM [Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao],” said Mateo. “ARMM needs more investments for the production of halal feed or those with no pork component like lard.”

Mateo noted that investments in the feed industry are hindered by the lack of land since large areas have been converted for other purposes and not agricultural production.

Why Spray Fat after Pelleting?

Firstly, I will introduce one type of fat spraying machine-pellet coating machine. The pellets coating machine adopts excellent post-addition technology, which can spray nutriment and medicine on the formed pellets' surface. You can add oil and fat, zymin, vitamin, organic acid and microorganism etc. It is an important machine for feed pellet processing. The nutrition adding machine can improve the quality and processing characters of the feed pellets.

Feed Pellet Coating Machine
Why Spray Fat after Pelleting?
1. Spraying fat after pelleting can improve the additive quantity. Improving the fat ratio according to the formula won’t influence the firmness of the feed pellets.
2. The fat spraying adopts post-addition technology, that can decrease the fat residua on the processing equipment, thus the risk of cross contamination reduces too.
3. Post-pelleting fat spraying can upgrade the feed quality. The physical property of the feed is improved. The fat has certain permeability, it can permeate into the pellets in subsequent crafts and transport process. That can reduce the scatter of feed particles and dust.

Feed Pellet Grading Sieve

The common feed pellet grading sieves have two types: vibrating feed pellet grading sieve and rotary feed pellet grading sieve. Grading sieve is a necessary equipment for feed pelletizing plants. I will introduce rotary feed pellet grading sieve as the following.

Rotary feed pellet grading sieve is designed to sieve and grade feed pellets or the intermediate products after secondary crushing. It can also be used to clean the raw materials for pelletizing. The grading sieve usually has two or three sieving layers, with good sieving and grading effect. Customers can choose the suitable one according to their need.

Rotary Feed Pellet Grading Sieve
How does the Feed Pellet Rotary Grading Sieve Work?
The screening effect is important for the quality and output of feed pellets. In order to improve the yield and reduce the power consumption during pelletizing process, some pelletizing plants use the feed pellet mills with large die diameter. Then they crush the large pellets into smaller ones. The crushed pellets should be graded to separate out the fine powder and large pellets, and get the qualified pellets at last. The rotary grading sieve is equipped with two sieve layers. The large pellets on the upper screen will be crushed again; the qualified pellets are in the inter-layer; and the powered or small particle materials under the lower screen will be pelletized again.

Feed Pellets for Ducks

Duck gets more popularity around people due to the features of easy digestion, rich vitamin B, E and niacin content.

Now breeders are more inclined to using feed pellets to raise ducks. Duck feed pellets should consider the ducks' living condition, feed ingredients, nutrition value, production property etc.
Feed Pellets for Ducks
Breeders should fully utilize the local feed ingredients which have nutritional value and low price so as to reduce production cost. The varieties of feed pellets should be as much as possible in order to make nutrition comprehensive. Some people think the more nutritional the feed pellets the better the ducks. Actually it is wrong because all poultry's feed intakes rely on feeds’ energy level. Ducks intake less feed pellets which have high energy level; and when feed have low energy level the feed intakes will increase. Therefore the feed pellets’ protein and energy proportions should be balanced otherwise it causes innutrition or overnutrition and feed pellet waste.

General Introduction to Counterflow Pellet Cooler

The counterflow pellet cooler is applied for efficient cooling of hot and moist pelleted products with good flowing capabilities. Typical applications are for cooling of feed pellets and wood pellets. It can reduce the temperature of pellets from 80~90℃to about 3~5℃ above ambient temperature. And the pellet moisture content is reduced from 17%~18% to 12%~13%. The advantages in energy efficiency, easy operation, great cooling result and lower investment cost have made the counterflow pellets cooler the preferred choice for most users of feed and wood pellets plant.

countercurrent/counterflow pellet cooler
How to Choose a Pellet Cooler for Your Pellet Plant?
The counterflow pellet cooler material discharging device adopts slide valve reciprocating type, it is suitable for pellet materials. Some coolers are with shutter type discharge mechanisms, which are adopting hydraulically powered discharging mechanism. These coolers are suitable for puffed and expanded materials.

What Should be Noticed When Operate the Counterflow Pellet Cooler?
1. Start the air-lock device and draught fan before the cooler starting to work.
2. Adjust the level indicator position according to the yield requirement. When the yield is high, install the level indicator at top position; on the contrary, install it below.
3. When the cooler stops working, expel the material in the cooler through operating the hand switch.
4. Don’t open the observation door when the cooler runs.

Factors Affecting The Feed Pellet Hardness

The hardness of feed pellets directly affects their appearance and production property. So controlling feed pellet hardness is a problem the feed manufactures have to face. The factors affecting the hardness mainly include the feed ingredients grinding process, feed ingredients mixing, water adding and steam modulating process and post curing technology etc.

Feed Pellets Made by Feed Pellet Mill

  • The pulverization fineness of feed ingredients plays the decisive role in feed pellets hardness. Generally speaking the finer the particle size the better the starch gelatinization.
  • Mixing raw materials can increase the uniformity of feed compositions with all kinds of granularity and ensure the feed pellets have basically identical hardness.
  • Steam modulating effect directly affects the inner structure of feed pellets. Steam quality and modulating time are two main factors affecting the modulating effect.
  • Post curing process can make the inner structure more compact and increase the stability and hardness of pelletized feeds.
  • The technical parameters of pelletizing die such as the aperture and compression ratio significantly affect the hardness of feed pellets.

Why Choose Feed Ribbon Blender When Process Feed Pellets?

Feed ribbon blender is an efficient and versatile blending machine for mixing of dry granules & powders homogeneously. One of the main application of ribbon blender is mixing grain powder with other nutrition in the feed pellet plant. During the blending process, you can add other liquids to the grain powder, making the feed pellets more nutritional. The feed ribbon blender is well suited for preprocessing of feed mixture for making aquaculture, poultry and fish feed pellets.

Feed Ribbon Blender
Why Choose Ribbon Blender In Feed Pellet Plants
1. Ribbon feed blender has outstanding mixing effects for powder & liquid, granule products and fibers, especially for mixing grain powder.
2. This mixing machine will not produce over-heating and pressure-fed results when processing allergic material. The nutrition of grain powder will not be damaged during mixing.
3. As for materials with different proportion and granule size, this feed mixing machine will not lead laying results which totally meet the requirement of feed material mixing of different raw materials.
4. You can add liquid conveniently while mixing.
5. Convective circulation ensures an efficient and homogeneous mixing effect.

The five aspects mentioned above totally confirm to the feed pellets material mixing standards. So ribbon blender is indispensable mixing machine for feed pellets production, especially for fish, shrimp and other aquatic feed pellets.

How to Control The Feed Pellet Quality During Pelletization

The production property of animal is closely related to the feed pellet quality. Most breeders concern how to correctly use the feed pellet mill to produce the high quality feed pellets. The equipment inspection and maintenance and modulating technology are two main factors.

  •  Inspect the wear pattern of ring die and compression roller. The wear of compression roller will affect the production capacity; the undue wear of ring die will decrease its effective thickness and influence the feed pellet quality.
  • Regularly check the crusher roller. The excessive wear of corrugated toothed ring decreases the crushing ability.
  • Examine the cutter of feed pellet mill. The cutter wear will increase the feed powder.
  • Inspect the steam separator to ensure the steam quality.
  • Inspect whether there is material backlog and screen surface damage in pellet cooler.
  • Examine the grading screen surface. The clogging and sticking of screen surface will affect the grading effect of feed pellets.

Advantages of Extrusion Over Pelleting

  • Buoyancy can be controlled, thus floating and slow sinking feeds can be produced.
  • For many species extrusion increases carbohydrate availability.
  • Extruded feeds are usually capable of carrying higher fat levels than pelleted feed.
  • Extruded pellets generally have greater physical integrity and produce less fines.
  • Under some circumstances greater water stability can be achieved with extruded feeds.
  • Extrusion can aid in the destruction of microorganisms and some other contaminants.
  • Wet materials such as fresh minced fish can be readily incorporated into extruded products.

Extruders — Dry Cooking or Wet Cooking

  • Dry Cooking Extruders
Dry cooking extruders are designed to run without adding any moisture to the ingredients. They are used in processing low moisture, highly expanded feed.

In dry extrusion there is no preconditioning of the ingredients with steam or moisture before entering the extruder barrel. All the heat produced by the dry extrusion process is generated by the mechanical energy applied to the ingredients via the screws, steamlocks and the barrel wall.

These simple dry extruders have since been transformed into more complex pieces of equipment with increasing product flexibility. Longer barrels can now provide increased capacity and cook. Increased selections of screws, steam locks and barrel liners allow high, medium or low shear configurations. Precision metering pumps for water and steam injection to the extruder barrel or to the conditioner provide additional capabilities, such as increased product cook and better shaped extruded products.

Aquafeed Extruder
  • Wet Cooking Extruders
Wet cooking extruders are more complex equipment with precision metering systems for steam or water injection into either the conditioner and/or the extruder barrel. Preconditioning is a very important part of the extrusion process. The single most important aspect of the preconditioning system is the potential for additional mixing and the retention time, which is necessary for chemical or physical reactions to take place.

Conditioner types are also varied with a single or double mixing shaft, and may include differential diameter or differential speed conditioning cylinder systems. Preconditioning of ingredients prior to entry into the extruder barrel increases the degree of cook and reduces the wear on internal extruder parts. To increase control of the cooking process, the extruder barrel of a wet extruder is also jacketed for steam or water injection for additional heating or cooling.

Like the dry extruder, the wet extruder has single and/or double flightscrews,
shearlocks, and heads. However, the wet extrusion system has a greater variety of single and double flight screws. It also has a more complex array of single or double, cut-flight screws and cone head screws, shearlocks and heads for more intricate extruder configurations.

Horse Farming and Feed Pellets

The modern horse industry has received good development in developed countries which becomes the main economic growth point and provides a large number of employment opportunities.

The modern horse owners not only require horses are healthy but also hope they are satisfactory in all respects. This drives horse owners to buy top quality horse feeds which have balanced nutrition and make horse receive sensual satisfaction. Horse feeds’ appearance, texture, flavor and palatability are the main considerations when feeding horses. Doubtlessly feed pellets are the optimal feeds for horses.

Feeding horses with feed pellets is considered from horses’ digestive physiological characteristics. Horses have hard teethes and developed masticatory muscle. So feeds with hard texture and soft surface conform to horses. Horse has fast metabolism and strong servitude thus feeds’ residence time in the stomach is short. Feeds with small size and balanced nutrition are good. Horse’s intestinal tract is uneven in thickness therefore they have bad ability in digesting low-quality coarse feeds. Feed pellets are produced based on the nutrition needs of horse, adopt scientific formula and mix a variety of raw materials evenly according to a certain proportion, then with a series of processing to form the final pellets. So pellet feed owns balanced nutrition content and good palatability for horse farming.

Treat H7N9 and Chicken Farming Rationally

Over the past two weeks there have been a number of people infected with the lesser-known H7N9 virus in China. H7N9 is a serotype of the species influenza virus A (avian influenza virus or bird flu virus). H7 normally circulates among avian populations with some variants known to occasionally infect humans. Now patients infected with H7N9 are increasing. The exact infection source has not been detected but H7N9 has caused great damage to poultry industry especially chicken farming.

H7N9 Affects Chicken Farming
The H7N9 flu is detected in some poultry samples but the varieties of birds are wide and poultry is just a few varieties of the birds so it is not scientific to simply think the source of H7N9 flu is poultry. The direct influence is that people don’t eat chicken and kill chickens. This is unfair for farmers especially the poultry practitioners and causes unnecessary damage to chicken industry ant the whole industry chain.

Now for the chicken farming the breeders should take measures to prevent H7N9 flu. Improving chicken’s immune system is an important preventive measure. Feed is the material foundation and the main source of energy and nutrition for chicken growth and reproduction. Only the good feeds can increase the chicken’s immune system to prevent diseases. Feed pellets is ideal for raising chicken. It is produced by adopting scientific formula, mixing a variety of raw materials evenly according to a certain proportion and a series of processing. It has balanced nutrition for chicken farming. And during the pelletizing process liquid nutrition can be added to improve disease resistance. The good environment can reduce the chances that chicken are infected with H7N9 flu. The chicken feed pellets which have cylinder shape and do not produce dust are good to the living environment.

What should be Noticed When Choose Aquafeed Raw Materials?

1.You can consider amino acid as one of the raw materials first.
2. Combining with local resource, confirm the raw materials varieties within 10.
3. When select protein material, you can take lysine and methionine unit prices as purchasing standard, but not the unit price of protein.
4. Don't use soybean meal or sesame meal with burnt appearance and smell, for lots of lysine is destroyed.
5. Fish meal is the main raw material of animal protein. You must analyze its amino acid before using.
6. Avoid using meat meal in hot seasons. The fat is easy to be oxidized and cause liver disease.
7. Silkworm chrysalises are easy to be oxidized for its high oil content. Test their freshness before purchase.
8. Blood meal is suitable for extrusion and spray drying technology for its low digestibility.
9. Wheat is better than wheat middling, for it can avoid adulteration and ensure the freshness.
aquafeed and aquafeed raw materials
10. Use zeolite powder, not stone powder.
11. Choose bean oil, rapeseed oil, edible lard or chicken oil for freshwater fish feed formula. Don't choose fish oil.
12. Feather meal processed by good hydrolysis process can be added into the formula, but not exceed 3%.
13. If choose outsourcing premix, check carefully.
14. Amino acid composition coconut cake and grape cake is not so good, you'd better not use.
15. Using microcapsule amino acid is a trend in aquafeed processing. It's the key of the production effect that whether the amino acid can tolerate high temperature tempering.
16. Don't purchase or add table salt.
17. The blood-cell protein must be all-broken, or it has no value.
18. Notice the aflatoxin and other hygiene indexes when purchase peanut meal.

Raw Materials for Aquafeeds

Common basic raw materials to the manufacture of most aquafeeds are similar to those employed in the manufacture of other types of animal feeds. However, it should be noticed that aquafeeds should avoid the use of high levels of plant or vegetable fibers and carbohydrates which are poorly digested and transformed by fishes. Raw materials for aquafeeds include cereals (maize, wheat, barley, rice, oat etc.), cereal by-products (wheat flour, corn bran, wheat bran etc.), meat meal, fish meal, shrimp meal, squid meal, blood meal, poultry by-product meal, (full fat) soybean meal, other vegetable protein meals, fats and oils, vitamin and mineral premix, salt, stabilizers and binders etc.

extruded aquafeed and raw materials

The major components of aquafeeds are protein (plant protein, animal protein and single cell protein), starch (sinking aquafeed consists more than 10% and floating aquafeed consists more than 20%), crude fat, raw fiber, crude ash and micronutrients.
